Federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has said that Nawaz Sharif’s passport will not be renewed but if he wants to return home, a special certificate can be issued.

During a media briefing in Islamabad, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said that the names of Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz have been in the ECL since August 20, 2018.

Those whose names are in the ECL are neither issued a passport nor have their passports renewed.

Speaking about the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s long march, the minister said that they should extend it till after Ramadan.

“The government has always been cooperative with them and will continue this unless the law is broken.” He pointed out that the movement has changed a number of their decisions and should change this one as well.

Regarding the Senate elections, the Federal Minister said that there will be no surprises and Imran Khan will also win the Senate elections.

Moreover, Shaikh Rashid said that he will be visiting border areas in the upcoming days to overlook the voting situation there. “A new committee has been formed for the appointment of the new NADRA chairperson as well,” he added.

It may be recalled that Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to seven and 10 years in prison in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Avenfield flats references. His sentence in the Al-Azizia reference was suspended. He has filed an appeal seeking its annulment.

In October 2019, the IHC had granted Nawaz bail on humanitarian grounds and allowed him to travel to London.
