HALEJI: At least five people were killed by drowning as a Chingchi rickshaw fell into a canal near Haleji Lake in Thatta district on Monday.

According to details, 10 people were travelling on Chingchi when the accident happened. Three of them were rescued alive, while two were missing.

Sources said local swimmers dunked into the KDA Canal and rescued three people alive. Search for the other two is still on. The victims were residents of Dhabeji and they reached Haleji area for the purpose of Tableegh.

The accident took place because overloading of the rickshaw and fast wind, said the sources. The deceased have been identified as Asif Khan, Gohar, Hamza, Haji Maqbool Toor and Gul Rehman.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has expressed grief over the incident and condoled family of the victims and the Tableehi Jamaat. He directed to find the missing persons.

According to the migrant relief organization Caminando Fronteras, at least 44 migrants had drowned after their boat sank off the coast of Western Sahara on May 11.

Twelve other people had escaped the catastrophe, which occurred when the boat capsized off the coast of Cap Boujdour, according to the agency’s Helena Maleno.

Maleno had said the survivors were apprehended.
