ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Umar Ata Bandial has recommended, fourth most senior judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC), Justice Shahid Waheed to be appointed as a judge in the Supreme Court.

Local media has quoted sources as saying that the Judicial Commission of Pakistan has been convened on Thursday to discuss and finalise about Justice Shahid Waheed’s appointment for the top court. He will be the second judge from the LHC to be elevated to the SC and 15th in the SC judges seniority list.

It is pertinent here to mention that six judges have been elevated to the apex court disregarding seniority number, a matter which created quite a buzz in the legal fraternity. There are three vacancies in the SC, but the top judge has so far nominated one judge. It has not been confirmed yet if Justice Qazi Faez Isa will arrive from abroad to attend the JCP meeting or not.

LHC Justice Waheed will become Pakistan’s top judge following retirement of Justice Ayesha Malik in June 2031.

On June 14, a five-member bench headed by Justice Bandial had heared the suo moto case of interference in high-profile cases.

At the outset of the hearing, The Chief Justice had said that the court would not let anyone take advantage of the situation in Pakistan adding that the parliament should legislate as per legal requirements.

He had also said that the apex court would keep a close watch to obstruct the interference by the institutions. The court had also remarked that it did not want to pass a ruling that can cause hurdles for the government.
