ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is expected to announce the verdict in the PTI foreign funding case by mid-August, Bol News reported.

According to report, the ECP is preparing to deliver the long-delaying verdict in the prohibited funding case against the PTI. In this regard, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) is holding regular meetings to review the final verdict before the announcement.

Sources informed that the decision of the PTI prohibited funding case is expected by mid-August. The ECP has reserved the verdict on July 21, 2022, after scrutinizing all records. The case has been pending since 2014.

The government has also been pressuring on the ECP to announce the verdict in the PTI foreign funding case. A day ago, a delegation of PDM and MQM leaders visited the head office of the ECP and urged to announce the verdict at the earliest.

PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said the delegation conveyed to the ECP that it was their “constitutional responsibility” towards the people of Pakistan to release the report about the PTI’s funds and take action accordingly.

The prohibited funding case, previously called the foreign funding case, was filed by PTI founding member Akbar S Babar and has been pending since Nov 14, 2014. Babar had alleged serious financial irregularities in the party’s funding from Pakistan and abroad.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also urged the ECP to announce its judgement on the long-delayed case.

The prime minister, in a tweet, said that the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was disqualified for not taking salary while contrary to that the PTI leader was being treated as “untouchable.” He said that despite the passage of eight years, the decision in the foreign funding case was yet elusive.

He said that in the foreign funding case, Imran Khan filed nine writ petitions in the Islamabad High Court and also got 50 adjournments. He said the eight-year delay was evidence how Imran Khan was being protected.
