RAWALPINDI: The 64th martyrdom anniversary of Major Tufail Muhammad, recipient of Nishan-e-Haider, is being observed on Sunday.

Major Tufail Muhammad was born in Hoshiarpur city of eastern Punjab on  July 22, 1914. He was commissioned in 16th Punjab Regiment in 1943.

After independence, he served on administrative position in on the Punjab Regiment of the Pakistan Army in 1947–58. His mostly served with the East Pakistan Rifles as the commanding officer of the military company near the Indo-Pakistan border.

In August 1958, the Indian Army troops occupied the Lakshmipur area in East Pakistan. Major Tufail Muhammad was tasked to recapture the occupied area.

In the line of his duty, Major Tufail Muhammad launched attack on Indian infiltrated troops and set an example of bravery and leadership.

Major Tufail Muhammad faced heavy resistance from enemy but carried on with his mission. In spite of being seriously injured, he continued to lead his troops in battle as the enemy was successfully evicted and the area was recaptured. The Indian forces were driven out, leaving four dead and three prisoners.

He embraced martyrdom on August 7, 1958. His last words were, “I have completed my duty; the enemy is on the run.” He was aged 44. He was buried in Burewala, Punjab and the federal government later built a marble tomb in 1967

In 1967, he was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military award for his courage and bravery.
