ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Saturday constituted a new larger bench to hear the contempt of court case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan.

A case was registered against the former prime minister over his statement against Additional Sessions Judge, Islamabad, Zeba Chaudhry, at a rally in F-9 Park of the federal capital.

The larger bench comprising of five judges will be headed by Chief Justice Athar Minallah. The bench includes Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurangzeb, Justice Babar Sattar, and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri.

It should be noted that the Supreme Court has issued a show cause notice to Imran Khan for insulting remarks against Additional Sessions Judge Zeba Chaudhary and has summoned him personally on August 31.

Chief Justice Athar Minallah reached the Islamabad High Court after being on leave from July 12 to August 25. Justice Mohsin Kiyani has assumed responsibilities in his absence.

On Friday, he Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued a show-cause notice Imran Khan in the contempt of court case at his Banigala residence.

The show cause notice noted that Imran’s threatening remarks against a female appear before the IHC bench on August 31, 2022 and asked him to explain why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against him.

The notice said the reason why the PTI chairman made threatening and insulting remarks against the judge because he wanted to get the verdict of his choice in the case which was sub judice at the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The notice said that by making the objectionable speech, the former prime minister tried to obstruct justice.

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad had earlier approved an interim bail of  Imran Khan and directed the authorities not to arrest him until September 1.

It is to be noted here that an anti-terrorism case had been registered against Imran Khan at Margalla police station in Islamabad after he threatened the Islamabad police officers and a lady judge at a public rally.
