The Lahore High Court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking a direction for legislation on foreign funding to political parties.

Farid Adeel, a lawyer by profession, filed the petition pleading that the political parties received foreign funding with impunity under the garb of section 17 of the Election Act 2017.

He submitted that the political parties did not disclose foreign funding as there were loopholes in the existing legislation on the matter. He asked the court to order for a new legislation on the issue so the political parties could not misuse foreign funding.

Justice Shahid Waheed observed that the petitioner was not an aggrieved party in the matter.

The lawyer argued that any citizen could move the courts if a matter related to public interest.

However, the judge dismissed the petition for being not maintainable.
