KARACHI: Dengue fever cases sharply increasing in Karachi and its adjoining areas as 403 more dengue cases surfaced in the city in the last 24 hours.

The Vector-Borne Diseases (VBD) Department of Directorate General Health Services Sindh has recorded 426 new dengue cases across the Sindh province out of which 403 were registered in the Karachi division alone.
This year, a total of 4,815 dengue cases emerged in the province out of them 4,352 were recorded in Karachi from January 01 to September 15, 2022.

The dengue fever has claimed a total of nine deaths out of the six that were reported in Karachi East and one each in Karachi Central, Karachi South, and District Malir.

In September, a total of 2,246 dengue fever cases surfaced so far out of which 2,145 were recorded in the Karachi division.

The majority of dengue cases were recorded in 1,741 in Karachi East this year so far, followed by 943 in Karachi Central, 784 in Karachi South, 409 in District Korangi, and 201 in Malir District.

Notably, Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Post rainy season is suitable for the spread of the infection and for the growth of ‘aedes aegypti’, the mosquito that causes dengue fever.

The symptoms of dengue fever begin three to fourteen days after infection and may include a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle, and joint pains, eye pain, and bone pain. It can also be associated with characteristic skin rash. In the worst condition, there could be bleeding from the gums, nose, mouth, ears, and other parts of the body.
