Arshad Sharif’s services to journalism are ‘unforgettable’: President Alvi

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi on Tuesday visited the residence of slain BOL News anchorperson and senior journalist Arshad Sharif.

First Lady Begum Samina Arif Alvi accompanied him. President Alvi expressed his condolences to the family of Arshad Sharif. He shared his grief and prayed for forgiveness for the deceased.

The president said he was deeply saddened and aggrieved over the death of Arshad Sharif. He said the services of Arshad Sharif for independent journalism and freedom of the press are unforgettable and will always be remembered.

Arshad Sharif used to express his opinion with research and facts without any fear, the president said. He offered his sincere condolences and prayed that Allah Al-Mighty grants the deceased a place in heaven and patience to the bereaved family.

Earlier President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had expressed deep grief and shock over the tragic death of journalist Arshad Sharif.

In their separate statements, they commiserated with the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul. President Arif Alvi said Arshad Sharif’s death is a “great loss to journalism and Pakistan”.

A day earlier, PTI Chairman Imran Khan also visited the residence of Arshad Sharif and offered his condolences. Senior PTI leaders have paid a visit to condole with the journalist’s heirs.

In a series of tweets, Imran Khan said that he is shocked at the brutal murder of Arshad Sharif who “paid the ultimate price for speaking the truth”.

He added, “He had to leave the country and be in hiding abroad but he continued to speak the truth on social media, exposing the powerful. Today the entire nation mourns his death.”

Imran Khan further demanded a proper judicial investigation to examine his statements and other evidence. He also extended his prayers and condolences to his grief-stricken family.

“We have descended into a state of brutality, unknown in civilised society, indulged in by the powerful against those who dare to criticize and expose wrongdoings,” he said.
