Karachi commissioner fixes milk price at Rs170/ litre, dairy farmers reject it
KARACHI: Issuing a notification, Karachi Commissioner Muhammad Iqbal on Tuesday said price of milk had been fixed at Rs170 a litre in the megalopolis, Bol News reported.
On the other hand, President Dairy Farmers Shakir Umar Gujjar rejected the notification saying that dairy farmers pooh-poohed the commissioner’s decision.
The commissioner, while presiding a meeting regarding milk price, said he had consulted all the stake holders to fix the price at Rs170. “Hence, the official price of milk is Rs170 a litre,” he said.
Iqbal said the official price would be implemented, come what may. Nobody would be allowed to challenge writ of the state, he maintained.
On September 8, milk sellers in Karachi and Hyderabad had increased the prices of milk and curd by Rs10 and Rs40 to Rs180 and Rs280 respectively.
But there was no notification issued by the authorities concerned and no action had been initiated against the profiteers by the district administration.
The milk sellers and dairy owners had increased the products’ prices by Rs30 a few months ago.
The price control committee of district administrations in both cities looked helpless before the milk sellers and dairy owners and were playing the role of silent spectators.
The dairy owners had started fixing prices on their own as they had stopped taking the district administration into consideration.
