Sidra Amin on a journey to score big for Pakistan
Sidra Amin, the opening hitter for Pakistan’s women’s cricket team, has had an incredible 2022. In 49 ODIs, the 30-year-old cricketer has three hundreds, all of which came in 2022.
Her unbroken 176 off 151 balls against Ireland in the first ODI of the series on Friday, which included 20 fours and one six, not only enabled her team win by a margin of 128 runs, but also helped Pakistan secure important ICC Women’s Championship points.
Prior to Friday’s game, Sidra had played in 10 one-day internationals (ODIs) this year and had amassed 420 runs. These runs included two centuries, including one against Sri Lanka in the ICC Women’s Championship match at the Southend Club in Karachi in June (104 against Bangladesh, the first century by a Pakistani batter in the Women’s World Cup).
Her innings of 176 surpasses Javeria Khan’s 133 not out against Sri Lanka at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in January 2015 to become the greatest individual score among Pakistan’s hitters.
In an exclusive interview with PCB Digital, the Lahore-born hitter recalled her innings and match-winning record first-wicket partnership with Muneeba Ali, who made her first ODI century, and said: “I always work hard and prepare myself before going into the match. But this year, I believed in and supported my ability to succeed. I’ve modified my strategy a little bit; now I consider scoring runs on each ball, and it’s beginning to pay off.
Sidra, who has 1,180 ODI runs in 49 games, hailed the encouragement from her teammates and the confidence they gave her to inspire her to record an incredible tonne on Friday.
Talking about the individuals who inspired and helped her perform at this level, Sidra stated: “I would like to dedicate my blistering innings to my parents — who have been with me from the start to support in good and bad times.”
