ISLAMABAD: The Special Joint Investigation Team (SJIT) constituted to probe the killing of senior journalist Arshad Sharif on Tuesday received a detailed briefing from the fact-finding committee.

The SJIT held its third meeting at the City Police Office (CPO) Headquarters in Islamabad. The SJIT had a detailed briefing from the fact finding committee formed by government to investigate the high-profile case of the renowned journalist who was killed in Kenya.

The SJIT has also drawn a list of witnesses other than Arshad Shari’s family to record their testimonies. The committee issued summoned yesterday to record their statements.

The JIT was unable to meet with Arshad Sharif’s mother due to her ill health. The committee will examine the statements and testimonies of the witnesses, The meeting of SJIT was adjourned till tomorrow.

During the second meeting held on Monday, the SJIT decided to make a list of witnesses and recorded their statements.

The JIT instructed the Superintendent of Police (SP) Saddar to immediately contact Arshad Sharif’s family members and arrange a meeting. The investigation team decided to hold meetings on the daily basis and review performance related to the case.

Earlier, the special JIT decided to record the statements of Arshad Sharif’s mother and widow in connection with the murder case investigation.

The JIT will devise its own Terms of Reference (ToRs) for carrying out the probe into the murder case. The team will record the testimonies of Arshad Sharif’s mother and widow before others.

The team is also expect to leave for Nairobi, Kenya and has started to prepare travel documents. The fact-finding committee had already visited Kenya and Dubai as part of the murder probe but had sought more information.

The Special Joint Investigation Team (SJIT) was formed on the directives of the Supreme Court of Pakistan after it took notice of the journalist’s murder. The court had ordered police to registered the FIR within a day and submit a response.
