LAHORE: PTI chairman Imran Khan has submitted a reply to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in the prohibited funding case and sought exemption from appearing on medical grounds.

The former prime minister did not appear before the federal agency and submitted a letter through his lawyer, expressing his inability to appear in person after being injured in a botched assassination attempt.

Imran said his movement has been restricted after the attack in Wazirabad. He said the allegations against him are bogus and the FIR was registered without any formal inquiry. The letter said the transactions dating back to 2013 are old and banks are seeking time to provide the records.

He said the investigation team has been asked repeatedly to come to Zaman Park in Lahore. He requested to take his circumstances into consideration as his mobility has been limited due to injury.

It must be mentioned that a banking court has instructed the FIA to make Imran Khan a part of the investigation in the prohibited funding case until January 31.

Earlier this month, a financial court in Islamabad extended Imran Khan’s interim bail in the funding issue till January 31.

Banking Court Judge Rakhshanda Shaheen heard Imran Khan’s request seeking an exemption from personal appearance on medical grounds.

Imran Khan’s counsel informed the court that Imran Khan had a medical check-up on January 3 and that the doctors instructed him to stay in bed for two weeks.

He further stated that the FIA had been instructed to conduct an investigation at Imran Khan’s Zaman Park property. He pleaded with the court to grant him a further two-week exemption from personal appearance on medical grounds.

The special prosecutor contended that Imran Khan was running political affairs but did not appear before the court. He requested the court to reject Imran Khan’s plea for exemption from personal appearance.

Special Prosecutor Rizwan Abbasi pointed out that it was not possible for the investigation officer to go to Lahore to investigate.

The judge remarked that it was the duty of the investigation officer to conduct an investigation and the court will not give any direction.

In October last year, FIA registered a case against eleven people including PTI Chairman Imran Khan in foreign funding. The nominated persons also included Sardar Azhar Tariq, Saifullah Niazi, Syed Younus, Aamir Mehmood Kiani, Tariq Shaikh and Tariq Shafi, and the manager of a private bank.
