Moonis Elahi removed as PML-Q parliamentary leader in NA

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has removed Moonis Elahi as parliamentary leader in the National Assembly.

Former federal minister Moonis Elahi was serving as the parliamentary leader in the National Assembly and has been removed from the post. The PML-Q President had appointed Tariq Bashir Cheema for the post.

The move shows the widening rift between the Chaudhry family ever since the PML-Q decide to side with the Imran Khan and went on to form the government in Punjab.

Earlier this week, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain suspended the party membership of outgoing Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi.

Elahi has been issued a show cause notice for talking about the possibility of his party’s possible merger with the PTI

Chaudhry Shujaat called an urgent meeting of the senior leaders, where it was noted that the Elahi did not have the authority to merge the party with PTI.

“Your [Elahi] party membership is suspended until the explanation,” the notice read, adding that PML-Q, maintains its individual identity, vote bank, party discipline, and rules and regulations.

“In relation to that, you [Elahi] are served a notice of seven days demanding an explanation within those days — either as an individual or by the lawyer — for such an unlawful and unconstitutional act.”

“Otherwise, action would be taken against you under the party constitution’s article 16 and article 50,” the notice added.

The decision was taken during a high-level party meeting attended by PML-Q Secretary-General Tariq Bashir Cheema, Senior Vice president Chaudhry Salik Hussain, and senior leader Chaudhry Shafay Hussain.

The development took place days after Punjab Assembly was dissolved on the advice of Parvez Elahi and differences emerged between over supporting the PTI.

A show-cause notice was also sent to Moonis, Hussain Elahi and Senator Kamil Ali Agha. They have been given a seven-day period to provide an explanation or relinquish party positions.
