KARACHI: Sindh Information and Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Friday launched Pakistan’s first electric bus service in Karachi.

Talking to the media after inaugurating the bus service, Memon said it is the best and cheapest transport service for the general public. He said the bus service will be operational from today (Friday) and those traveling to the airport can also avail the facility.

He said environment-friendly Peoples Electric Bus service will commence from Tank Chowk, Malir Cantt to Clock Tower Roundabout, Sea View via Khayaba-e-Ittehad.

He said the fare has been set at Rs50 to provide an affordable and comfortable ride. He said the electric buses have more than 30 seats including designated seats for differently-abled persons.

He said that the in first phases 10 electric vehicles will run from Airport to Clock Tower. He said that a solar system has been installed for charge the buses. He mentioned that each bus will complete a journey of 240 kilometres after a single charge.


In his Twitter message, Memon said that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led Sindh government is always focused on development, progress and prosperity.

Last month, the Sindh government decided to launch electric taxi services for the citizens of Karachi, including pink-coloured taxis driven by women for female passengers.

Memon said that the service would be started in two phases comprising blue and pink-coloured taxis. The pink taxis will be equipped with cameras and a monitoring system to ensure safety and security.

He said the towards electric transportation services aims to be sustainable, safe, affordable, and comfortable for citizens.
