WASHINGTON: The United States has announced an additional $100 million to continue supporting flood recovery and rehabilitation efforts in Pakistan, said a statement by US State Department.

USAID Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman, who led the United States delegation to the International Conference on Climate Resilient Pakistan in Geneva, announced the US is pledging an additional $100 million to continue supporting Pakistan’s recovery efforts from the devastating floods.

US State Department spokesperson Ned Price issued a statement and said the funding reinforces America’s commitment to the Pakistani people and addressing the climate crisis.

The assistance brings US commitment to more than $200 million coupled with $97 million in flood relief, disaster resilience, and food security assistance provided in 2022, and $4.8 million in financial support from the US International Development Finance Corporation (IDFC).

The new $100 million pledge includes both new and redirected funding. USAID will provide $79.3 million to prioritise urgently needed support for agriculture and food security, health, economic growth, education, protection and governance.

This funding also includes $20.7 million to provide humanitarian assistance to help flood-affected Afghan refugees and host communities in Pakistan, and assistance to restore damaged judicial sector infrastructure including courthouses, police stations, and training facilities.

He said the United States recognizes Pakistan’s recovery will be a continuing process in the months and years ahead. He said the US will support Pakistan in its efforts to create a more climate-resilient future for its people and added the pledge is part of the continued partnership.
