PESHAWAR: Caretaker Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Muhammad Azam Khan on Tuesday chaired a crucial meeting to review the law and order situation in the province.
Chief Secretary, Inspector-General Police, Home Secretary, and other senior police officials attended the meeting on the security situation.
The meeting reviewed the overall security situation of the province ahead of the general elections. The concerned authorities briefed the chief minister on various security aspects related to the polls.
For the first time, the general elections will be held simultaneously in the amalgamated and arranged districts of the province, the meeting was informed.
More than 56,000 security personnel are required for conducting polls in the province, while an additional 1,500 personnel of the Frontier Corps are required for the security of important political leaders during the election campaign.
The chief minister assured to inform Governor Khyber about the situation after the briefing and recommendations given by the concerned authorities.
It must be mentioned that President Arif Alvi has announced 9th April as the date for both the provincial assemblies of Punjab and KP which were dissolved earlier this year.
However, KP governor Haji Ghulam Ali had written a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), stating that the province’s security situation did not allow for elections at the moment.
The governor had sent a letter to the caretaker Chief Minister a few days back seeking security assessment for holding general elections in the province.
“You are requested to assess the security situation in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and appraise as to whether the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in view of the current situation, is in a position to provide requite security for the peaceful conduct of the general elections to the provincial assembly,” said the letter dated February 5.
After five days, the government sent a reminded to the caretaker chief minister and asked him to inform about the situation in the province at the earliest to proceed further in connection with polls.
