ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan has decided to write a letter to the finance ministry seeking funds to conduct the general elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The election commission had started preparations to conduct the elections in both provinces after the verdict of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The apex court ruled that elections must be held within ninety days after the assemblies are dissolved.

In his regard, the election commission has decided to write a letter to the federal government and institutions for the elections in both provinces.

Sources revealed the election commission will write a letter to the Federal Ministry of Finance for the provision of Rs30 billion funds to conduct the elections. It will also request that the funds should be provided immediately.

The electoral body also decided to write a letter to the Ministry of Interior for the provision of security during the elections.

The election commission will write another letter to Registrar Lahore High Court and Registrar Peshawar High Court, requesting the judiciary to provide judicial officers from subordinate courts. The election commission will issue orders to federal institutions under Article 220.

Furthermore, the ECP has invited applications from political parties for allotment of electoral symbols for the polls. The applications were invited under Section 216 of the Election Act, 2017.

The election commission advised representatives of political parties to submit affidavits along with the applications to the Secretary ECP till March 8.
