ISLAMABADD: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) widened the scope of investigation against former accountability adviser Mirza Shahzad Akbar.
NAB Lahore has sought details of Shahzad Akbar and his family’s properties and assets from authorities across the province. The anti-graft agency has asked the authorities concerned to provide details by March 6.
The former special assistant is accused of possessing assets beyond means and committing irregularities in amounts recovered from United Kingdom and returned to Pakistan.
In October last year, NAB initiated an inquiry against Mirza Shahzad Akbar and summoned him to appear before the bureau.
Akbar was sent a questionnaire comprises 22 queries regarding his time as the accountability minister and his role in the sugar scam probe, oil companies scam, and the Rawalpindi Ring Road scam.
He has also been asked about his relationship with real estate tycoon Malik Riaz, British-Pakistani businessman Nisar Afzal, former Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) Rawalpindi director Arif Raheem, and former chairman of the defunct National Industrial Cooperative Finance Corporation (NICFC) Chaudhry Abdul Majeed.
He denied the charges and said there is blind vindictive accountability when money launderers are in power. He said he would give detailed answers to questions regarding Rawalpindi Ring Road, sugar and petroleum commission inquiries.
Mirza Shahzad Akbar served as Special Assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan on Interior and Accountability till his resignation in January 2022.
Earlier in August last year, the federal cabinet has approved placing Shahzad Akbar’s name on the Exit Control List (ECL). The PTI leader is currently in London and will be arrested upon return.
