SCBA strongly condemns postponement of elections in Punjab
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Thursday strongly condemned postponement of elections in Punjab by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
President Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Abid Shahid Zuberi in his statement said that the postponement of the elections by the Election Commission of Pakistan is a violation of the Constitution.
Abid Shahid Zuberi said ECP did not take into account the Constitution and the Supreme Court decision while making the decision. He said ECP has violated its constitutional mandate with the decision.
President SCBA said that the caretaker government cannot continue working for more than 90 days. He said restoration of democracy and timely elections are the need of the hours.
He said all institutions have the responsibility to protect the constitution as all constitutional officers have taken an oath to protect the constitution. He said violation of the constitution by the constitutional body should not be allowed.
Abid Shahid Zuberi further said Election Commission should withdraw the notification of postponement of the Punjab elections. He said SCBA stands with the Constitution and the decision of the Supreme Court. He said there is a dire need to unite the entire nation for the protection of democracy and the supremacy of law.
