Court suspends warrant in threatening female judge case
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Tuesday suspended the non-bailable arrest warrants for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan issued by a local court in the Toshakhana case.
IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq accepted the PTI chief’s plea against Additional Session Judge Zafar Iqbal’s decision and directed Khan to ensure that he appears before the lower court on March 13.
Following the high court’s decision, the sessions court, which was also hearing the Toshakhana case, ordered the former prime minister to appear before it, where he will be indicted.
PTI challenged the decision of rejection of plea against the non-bailable arrest warrant of Imran Khan in the Toshakhana case in Islamabad High Court (IHC) and the high court has reserved the verdict.
Chairman PTI Imran Khan filed the petition through his lawyer. In the petition filed in the Islamabad High Court, it has been requested to cancel the arrest warrant. Meanwhile, it has also been requested that the application be fixed for hearing today.
Earlier, Additional Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal rejected Khan’s plea for suspension of his non-bailable arrest warrant in Toshakhana case. In a detailed verdict, court stated that Imran Khan was called on first hearing on January 8 – he failed to appear – and still didn’t manage to appear on the hearings.
The verdict also maintained, “Imran Khan deliberately did not appear in the session court.” “Imran Khan did not give assurance of court appearance,” it added.
Earlier, Imran Khan’s lawyer Ali Bukhari submitted the plea to the court of Additional Session Judge Zafar Iqbal. During the hearing, the PTI lawyers argued that Imran Khan has always respected the judiciary adding that if Khan is willing to appear in court then the police cannot arrest him.
To which the court remarked that Imran Khan should have appeared for suspension of the arrest warrant. Imran Khan’s counsel informed the court that his client wants to know a way he can appear in court.
The petitioner’s counsel requested the court to suspend the warrants.
Notably, on February 28, a non-bailable arrest warrant was issued for Imran Khan for continuously failing to appear in the Toshakhana case.
Following the warrant, Islamabad Police yesterday reached Zaman Park to implement the orders. However, due to the huge gathering of PTI workers and stalwarts, the police didn’t make the arrest.
