LOS ANGELES: United States Democratic Congressman Brad Sherman has expressed concerns regarding the rising human rights violations in Pakistan.

Taking to Twitter, Congressman Sherman said he discussed the recent developments in Pakistan with Pakistan-origin Democratic candidate Dr Asif Mahmood.

He also mentioned having a telephone conversation with PTI chairman Iman Khan and discussing issues with him.

Brad Sherman, who represents California’s 32nd congressional district and is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, issued a statement and urged Pakistani authorities to ensure freedom of expression right to peaceful protest in the country.

Mr Sherman also condemned the violation of democratic values in Pakistan. He expressed concern about incidents of detention, torture, and sexual violence in Pakistan

He said the murder of journalist Arshad Sharif and the torture and killing of PTI activist Zille Shah is not the tradition of democratic countries.

He said the PTI worker was tortured to death and his body was thrown on the road. The gruesome murder should be investigated and those involved should be held accountable, he added.

He said former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s speeches are being banned and media channels are being shut down.

The Congressman said the actions are condemnable and the Government of Pakistan should take notice of the violations of human rights.

He reminded Pakistan’s government about its obligation to take action against those who violate human rights. “We will not hesitate from raising our voice against human rights violations,” he said.

The US politician further said that Pakistan should allow its citizens to express themselves and hold peaceful protests. He asserted that the United States will stand for human rights in Pakistan and around the world.

He said the US Congress is monitoring the situation in Pakistan very closely and wants to see a strong democratic nation. He clarified that Washington has no interest meddling in internal affairs and respects the Constitution of Pakistan,
