LAHORE: A Railway spokesperson on Monday asserted that the woman who was assaulted by a policeman on a train and subsequently discovered deceased had died after jumping from the train.

The female passenger, identified as Maryam Bibi, who had been assaulted by a police officer on a moving train last week, was found dead near Chani Goth Railway Station in Bahawalpur today.

According to the victim’s brother, the railway police officer took the woman—originally from Jaranwala’s Chak 40 Mor, Faisalabad—with him after violently beating her on April 7.

The victim’s brother stated that his sister was employed at a beauty parlour in Karachi and was traveling to Jaranwala to celebrate Eidul-Fitr.

However, a Public Relations official issued a statement alleging that the victim, Maryam Bibi, was grappling with mental health issues and passed away after leaping from the Lala Musa-bound Millat Express train near Chani Goth Railway Station.

“The other passengers on the train reported that they contacted the police after the victim, Maryam Bibi, began to scatter their belongings and behaved disruptively towards fellow passengers,” stated the PR spokesperson.

“The policeman physically assaulted the woman and relocated her to another coach,” he added, noting that, according to witnesses, she jumped from the moving train, leading to her demise.

Furthermore, a committee has been established to compile a report for submission to the Chairman of Pakistan Railways within three days.

The incident came to public attention following the circulation of a video depicting policeman Mir Hasan physically abusing a female passenger and two children on a moving train on social media.

The policeman was apprehended last week and was granted bail on the same day by a local court in Hyderabad upon posting a surety bond of Rs35,000.
