Prince William gave his uncle Prince Andrew an ultimatum about his ambitions to return to the spotlight at yesterday’s Order of the Garter event.
He is alleged to have vowed to skip the Windsor Castle celebration if the Duke of York was given a public role.
According to palace insiders, Andrew was eventually prevented from going as planned because it was anticipated that the throng would boo him.
While the royals decided to ban the duke as a ‘family decision,’ William and Charles are alleged to have pushed the Queen.
Andrew was deprived of his military titles and patronages in January after his sex abuse case threw the palace into disrepute.

The action was settled out of court, with Prince Andrew paying his accuser Virginia Giuffre a multi-million dollar compensation.
Ms. Giuffre, 38, claims she was trafficked by millionaire paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, a long-time friend of the Duke of Edinburgh.
She claims she was forced to have sex with Andrew when she was 17 and under the age of consent in the United States. The duke has categorically denied all charges, even after paying his settlement, and claims he has no recollection of meeting his accuser.
However, the damage to the palace has already been done, which is why royals were not keen on him attending yesterday’s ceremony in such a public capacity.
‘The Duke of Cambridge was insistent,’ a source told the Evening Standard. York would withdraw if he was forced to participate in public.’

The decision to remove Andrew, who is still a Knight of the Garter, was a ‘family choice,’ according to a royal insider.
Meanwhile a Buckingham Palace spokesman said, “The Duke of York will attend the investiture and lunch today but will not be part of the procession or service.”
The Order of the Garter was formed in 1348 by King Edward III, who was inspired by legends about King Arthur and his knights.
A church ceremony, an investiture for new members of the order, and a lunch are all part of the occasion.
Andrew was able to accompany the Queen, who is 96 years old, during the formal investiture of new members, which included the Duchess of Cornwall and former Prime Minister Tony Blair, as well as the lunch that followed.
