King Charles has been forced to postpone his first state visit to France, because of escalating tensions in the country

According to the statement, the decision was made by the French and British governments following a phone discussion between President Emmanuel Macron and the King.

Tensions in the country have been building as a result of Macron’s pension overhaul.

The visit has been rescheduled at a later date that has yet to be determined.

King Charles was scheduled to pay his first state visit to France as monarch on Sunday, commencing a three-day journey.

Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying, “The King and Queen Consort’s State Visit to France has been postponed.”

“Their Majesties greatly look forward to the opportunity to visit France as soon as dates can be found.”

In a statement, the Elysee said: “In light of yesterday’s announcement of a new national day of action against pension reforms on Tuesday, March 28, in France, the visit of King Charles III, originally scheduled for March 26 to 29 in our country, will be postponed.

“This decision was taken by the French and British governments after a telephone exchange between the President of the Republic and the King this morning, in order to be able to welcome His Majesty King Charles III in conditions that correspond to our friendly relationship.

“This state visit will be rescheduled as soon as possible.”

On Thursday, the ninth day of nationwide protests, tens of thousands of mostly peaceful demonstrators flocked to the streets of Paris, but violence occurred as French police clashed with black-clad, masked groups who targeted at least two fast food businesses, a supermarket, and a bank.

“The King and Queen Consort’s State Visit to France has been postponed,” a government spokesperson stated.

“This decision was taken with the consent of all parties, after the President of France asked the British Government to postpone the visit.”

The King is still scheduled to visit Germany as part of his European tour.

The cancellation would be a big embarrassment for Macron, who had thought the monarch’s visit would be a symbolic move in the two countries’ efforts to turn a page after years of strained relations following Brexit.

King Charles was scheduled to visit France for three days before heading to Germany, an itinerary considered as a coup for the French leader, who has pushed to establish himself as Europe’s de facto leader.
