Cheteshwar Pujara’s poor batting form continued in the County Championship 2022, as the senior Indian batsman scored only six runs off 15 deliveries on his Sussex start.

On day two of the division two game against Derbyshire, Pujara, who was playing his debut innings in County Championship 2022, was removed in the 24th over.

Derbyshire had amassed 505 in their first innings.

Pujara didn’t have the ideal start to his county tenure, and he’ll need a lot of runs to get back into the Indian Test team.

Following the series in South Africa, the seasoned hitter was dropped from the national team. Ajinkya Rahane was also left out of the Sri Lanka series at home.

Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistani wicket keeper, is also in Sussex’s starting lineup. The away team was 92 for four at the tea break, 413 runs behind Derbyshire.

After failing to attract buyers at the Indian Premier League super auction in February 2022, Pujara is now playing in England. Despite India’s tour of England last year, Pujara did not fly to England for a county stint because he was purchased by Chennai Super Kings at the IPL 2021 auction.

After an underwhelming show during India’s tour to South Africa earlier this year, Pujara was dropped from the Test squad for the two-match series against Sri Lanka at home.

Chetan Sharma, the chairman of India’s national selection committee, said the door will be open for Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, who were both fired.

In the next county and one-day tournaments, Pujara will replace Australia’s Travis Head as Sussex’s overseas batter.
