Sean Dyche has been dismissed as Burnley manager after being with the club for 10 years due to relegation in the Premier League.

Burnley is now 18th in the table, four points adrift of the relegation zone. They’ve only won one of their previous seven Premier League games, falling 2-0 to fellow relegation candidates Norwich on Sunday.

Burnley’s decision to sack Dyche was dubbed a “joke” by commentator Jamie Carragher, who added on Twitter: “If you had given him a fair budget you would never have had to worry about getting relegated.”

Gary Neville, another analyst, added: “Sean Dyche has done one of the best management jobs in Premier League history. Despite having a bantamweight budget, he spent years punching hard versus heavyweights.”

Mike Jackson, assisted by academy director Paul Jenkins, U23s goalkeeping coach Connor King, and club Captain Ben Mee, has been asked to lead the team against West Ham on Sunday.

After nearly a decade at Burnley, Dyche is no longer the Premier League’s longest-serving manager. In September 2012, he joined the England U21 backroom staff on a temporary basis before taking over at Burnley from Eddie Howe in October of the same year.

Burnley was promoted from the Championship twice under the 50-year-old, the most recent in the 2015/16 season.

He led Burnley to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League after signing a new four-year contract in September 2018. Burnley qualified for the Europa League for the first time in 51 years, and it was their best Premier League performance since a sixth-place finish in 1974.

Burnley finished in the top ten for the second consecutive season in 2019/20, after finishing 17th the previous season. This was, however, 11 points ahead of the bottom three.

“First and foremost, we would like to voice our great gratitude to Sean and his colleagues for their achievements at the Club over the last decade,” said Chairman Alan Pace in a statement.

“Sean has been a credit both on and off the field during his time at Turf Moor, valued by players, staff, supporters, and the wider football community.” However, the team’s performance this season has been poor, and while making this choice was extremely difficult, we believe a change is required to give the side the greatest possible chance of keeping its Premier League status with eight games remaining”.

“The process of replacing Sean has commenced, and more information will be provided to supporters as soon as possible.”

Ian Woan, his deputy manager, Steve Stone, his first-team coach, and Billy Mercer, his goalkeeping coach, have all left the club.
