There are ties to Rangers and the English Championship, but Ross Stewart is more than happy to have secured Sunderland’s spot in the latter.

The former Albion Rovers striker has risen quickly through the football ranks and scored the game-winning goal in a 2-0 play-off final victory over Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

It brings an end to the Black Cats’ four-year stay in the English third division, six years after Stewart joined Albion Rovers from youth football.

“You couldn’t have chosen a better way to achieve it,” the striker stated after scoring 26 goals this season.

“It’s an incredible sensation. That’s what it’s all about if you look at the crowd.”

“I believe we are a confident squad, but we also respect our opponents.” I believe you witnessed how good we were today, and it was well deserved. I’m at a loss for words.”

Alex Neil, the current Sunderland manager, and a former Hamilton player will be desperate to keep him for next season’s Championship campaign, but there are other suitors.

Rangers and a slew of Championship clubs have been connected with the ex-Rovers striker, and Andy Halliday of Hearts reckons Stewart is due it.

“People will be paying attention to Ross Stewart because of how well he’s done this season – I believe his career has been fascinating,” a former Rangers midfielder told.

“He deserves to be associated with clubs like Rangers because of the success that Sunderland has had this season.”

“I don’t think there’s any doubt in my mind that he’s earned his move, and I’m confident he’d be a wonderful signing for anyone with his goal record,” he added.
