After being the target of a racially insulting phrase said by three-time Formula One world champion Nelson Piquet, Lewis Hamilton declared that “the moment has come for action.” The governing body of Formula One and motorsport, the FIA, denounced the 69-year-old Brazilian who made the remarks during a podcast.
It’s more than just words, tweeted Hamilton. “These outdated viewpoints must shift because they have no place in our sport.
“My entire life, these attitudes and targets have been all around me. There has been ample opportunity for learning. It is now time to take action.”
Hamilton also tweeted in Portuguese, saying, “Let’s work on altering the mindset.”
Piquet, who won the world championship in 1981, 1983, and 1987, used the phrase while describing a collision involving Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen of Red Bull on the opening lap of the 2017 British Grand Prix.
Verstappen’s partner is Kelly, who is his daughter.
In a statement, Formula One stated that “discriminatory or racial rhetoric is unacceptable in any form and has no place in society.”
“Lewis is a fantastic representative of our sport and deserves admiration.
His relentless efforts to promote diversity and inclusiveness are an inspiration to many, and F1 is dedicated to continuing them.
The FIA stated in a statement: “The FIA vehemently rejects any racist or discriminatory speech or actions, which have no place in either sport or society at large.
We declare our unity with Lewis Hamilton and unwavering support for his dedication to inclusion, diversity, and equality in the motorsports.
The lone black driver on the grid, Hamilton, has been a vocal advocate for more diversity in the sport.
Following the killing of George Floyd in the USA in 2020, the seven-time world champion frequently wore the phrase “black lives matter” on his clothing and kneeled before races.
Hamilton has also advocated for environmental problems and the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
Hamilton’s team, Mercedes, issued a statement saying, “We condemn in the harshest terms any use of racist or discriminatory rhetoric of any type.”
“Lewis has led the fight against prejudice in our sport, and he truly champions diversity both on and off the track.
Together, we have a goal of creating a diverse and welcoming motorsport, and this incident highlights how crucial it is to keep working toward a better future.
