Francisco Lindor’s odd injury drew the attention of MLB fans

Francisco Lindor began playing baseball at a young age and relocated to Florida with his family when he was 12 years old. In the 2011 MLB draught, he was selected in the first round, eighth overall, by the Indians.

The New York Mets travel to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers in a matchup of two of Major League Baseball’s top teams. However, the Mets will be without their starting shortstop, Francisco Lindor, for Game 1 of the series due to an unusual injury.

Lindor was scratched from Thursday’s game after slamming his hotel room door shut on his hand, damaging his right middle finger.

This announcement elicited a strong reaction from MLB fans. The Mets are one of baseball’s top teams, and by any measure, they are a far cry from the squads who have struggled in recent seasons. Even so, it appears that this series is plagued by strange bad luck.

While Lindor’s injury is rare, it’s not unheard of in baseball, which is notorious for its strange ailments. Sneezing caused Goose Gossage and Sammy Sosa to throw their backs out. Jeremy Affeldt did, too, and he had a variety of other strange ailments throughout his career.

And, thankfully, this does not appear to be a long-term ailment for Lindor. Prior to the lineup’s release, New York manager Buck Showalter suggested that Lindor would “probably need a day” to heal, but that he could possibly serve as the designated hitter. Showalter may have kept Lindor out of the lineup in the end, but he doesn’t appear concerned about the long-term consequences.

Still, this should serve as a reminder to all of us to make sure our hands are clear of doors before closing them. It’s never too late to return back to basics, no matter how many times we’ve done it before.
