Golden State Warriors won their fourth NBA championship in eight seasons on Thursday night, beating Boston on the legendary parquet court.

The Warriors won the last three games of the best-of-seven NBA Finals series after falling down 2-1.

The San Francisco-based team has already won seven NBA titles in its history, with the Larry O’Brien Trophy most recently visiting Northern California in 2015, 2017, and 2018.

The Warriors won the first of these four titles seven years ago Thursday, June 16, 2015, when young talents Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, combined with first-year coach Steve Kerr, ended Golden State’s 40-year title drought.

Veteran backup Andre Iguodala was with the team for the previous three championships before joining the Miami Heat for two years before returning to Golden State this season.

The Philadelphia Warriors won the inaugural title in the Basketball Association of America — a precursor to the NBA — in 1947 before repeating as champions in 1956.

Golden State’s only previous championship came in 1975, after the club relocated to California but before the “Splash Brothers,” Curry and Thompson, appeared on the scene.

Prior to Thursday night, the Warriors were tied for third place in NBA history with Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls. Both the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers (originally of Minneapolis) have 17 championships.

This latest triumph for Golden State comes after a succession of dismal, injury-plagued seasons for the storied organisation.

Curry was out for nearly the entire 2019-20 season due to a broken hand, while Thompson was out for the whole 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons due to career-threatening knee and Achilles ailments.

Golden State’s latest championship is also the franchise’s first since moving over the Bay Bridge from Oakland’s Oracle Arena to San Francisco’s glittering new Chase Center, 16 miles away.
