Jake Bauers, a left-handed hitter, was signed from the Cincinnati Reds for cash by the New York Yankees. Bauers, 26, has been sent to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre of the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre International League.

Bauers hit.135 (13-for-96) with seven runs, three home runs, 12 RBI, 19 walks, and four stolen bases in 29 games with Triple-A Louisville in the Reds organisation this season. Bauers had a.213 batting average in three seasons in the Majors, with 27 home runs, 110 RBI, and a -0.6 bWAR.

In addition to first base, he has experience in the corner outfield positions.

In 2018, the former seventh-round pick debuted in the major leagues with the Rays, hitting.201/.316/.384 as a rookie. Bauers was a part of the three-team trade that sent Edwin Encarnación to Seattle, Carlos Santana to Cleveland, and Yandy Diaz to Tampa Bay that summer

Bauers went on to bat.226/.312/.371 with 12 home runs in 117 games with Cleveland in 2019. On June 14, he hit for the cycle.

Since then, the Californian has failed to find a place on a major-league team. Bauers was slated for assignment in June of 2021 after spending the pandemic-shortened season of 2020 at Cleveland’s alternate location. He was picked up by the Mariners a few days later. With 72 games under his belt, the lefty batted.220 with a.572 OPS in his age-25 season with Seattle.

Bauers chose free agency at the end of the 2021 season after failing to make the Cincinnati Reds’ big-league team.

In Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the left-handed hitter will join a plethora of noteworthy ex-MLB players. Bauers will be up against Greg Bird and Ronald Guzmán at first base, Derek Dietrich and José Peraza in the infield, and Ender Inciarte and Ryan LaMarre in the outfield.

Tim Locastro, a former Yankees outfielder, is also playing for the RailRiders as he recovers from a latissimus dorsi injury that landed him on the disabled list last month.
