Qatar vs Senegal 1-3 | FIFA World Cup 2022 Points Table and Teams Standings
Senegal successfully ended Qatar’s Group A campaign, defeating the hosts despite Mohammed Muntari scoring his nation’s first World Cup goal.
The hosts are currently on the verge of leaving their own World Cup after Senegal claimed Africa’s first victory in this 2022 competition.
Meshaal Barsham, the younger brother of the current world and Olympic high jump champion Mutaz Essa Barshim, was brought in for Qatar’s three substitutions, and he was fortunate to see Famara Diedhiou’s early header drop wide after being outmuscled to a corner.
Senegal appeared more likely to score first, but Idrissa Gueye’s shot went just wide. At the other end, Akram Afif was brought down by a challenge, but Qatar was not awarded a penalty.
The African champions took the lead after the first half with two goals on either side. The first came as a result of a defensive blunder when Boualem Khoukhi took a huge swing at a cross from Krepin Diatta, lost his balance, and handed the ball to Boulaye Dia, who put it past Barsham.
Ismail Jakobs’ right-wing corner was met by Diedhiou with a deft header at the near post three minutes into the second half.
Abdelkarim Hassan fired a shot wide before Edouard Mendy stopped Almoez Ali from scoring with Qatar’s first shot on goal of the competition. The hosts then responded forcefully.

Shortly after, Ismaeel Mohammad attempted another shot from close range, but Senegal goalkeeper Mendy made an even better stop to deflect it away.
Muntari, a substitute, provided a moment of history when he met Mohammad’s precise cross from the right with a powerful downward header to restore home hopes just as the hosts appeared to be running out of gas.
Four minutes later, one of Senegal’s substitutes, Iliman Ndiaye, surged down the right and pulled the ball back for Bamba Dieng to sweep in and finally secure the victory, quickly putting out those flames.
