Pele, a legendary player from Brazilian football whose true name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, passed away at age 82 after a battle with cancer.

Pele underwent a reevaluation of his chemotherapy treatments, which he has been undergoing since having surgery to remove a colon tumour in September 2021, and was admitted to a hospital in Sao Paulo on November 29.

A medical evaluation right before Christmas found that he needed therapy for cardiac and renal failure. He has been battling colon cancer since September 2021.

Doctors reported that his cancer had “advanced” before Christmas.

He “presents malignant disease progression and requires more care connected to renal and cardiac dysfunctions,” according to the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein.

On Saturday, family members paid the eponymous player a visit at the hospital in Sao Paulo.

On Christmas Eve, Pele’s son Edinho travelled to the hospital facility to visit his sisters Flavia and Kely Nascimento. Edinho was recently appointed coach of the Serie B football team Londrina, which is headquartered in Parana in the north.

At the age of 15, Pele began playing for Santos, and a year later, he joined the Brazilian national squad.

He made his World Cup debut in 1958 at the age of 17.

Brazil’s athletes honoured Pele by holding up a banner in his honour as the 82-year-old was moved to end-of-life care after chemotherapy failed to help his condition after defeating South Korea in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup.

Pele is regarded as one of the best players to have ever played the game, it should be noted.

He scored 643 goals in 659 official matches for the Brazilian team Santos, aiding his country’s three World Cup victories in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

He scored 77 goals in 92 games for his country’s national team.
