Pakistan captain Babar Azam scored 119 runs without being out. This helped the home team reach 224-4 at tea on the first day of the first Test between Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi.

The right-hander and Sarfaraz Ahmed, who was on 43 at the time, put together 114 runs without getting out. The pair seemed to be in charge for most of the second session as Pakistan tried to get back on track after losing four wickets quickly.

Pakistan was down to 48-3 after the first session because Abdullah Shafique (7), Shan Masood (3), and Imam-ul-Haq (24) were all out quickly.

At this point, Azam and Saud Shakeel put together a crucial 62-run partnership that helped the home team get back on track.

Shakeel scored 22 runs, but he was caught in the gully area, near where lunch was served.

Michael Bracewell took two wickets for New Zealand, while Ajaz Patel and captain Tim Southee each took one.

Azam won the coin toss and chose to bat first against New Zealand in the first Test in Karachi on Monday.

The home team made three changes from the last Test, which they lost to England at the same place. It was the first time they had ever been beaten 3-0 at home.

Sarfaraz Ahmed is playing his first Test since January 2019, and Mir Hamza is playing for the first time in four years.

Imam-ul-Haq is back after getting hurt and getting better.

New Zealand begins the first Test with three spinners and the same number of fast bowlers.

The last Test series between England and the visitors was also won 3-0 by England.
