Sam Curran, an English all-rounder, outbid both the Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians to become the most expensive player ever purchased at an IPL auction, setting a new record of INR 18.25 crore (USD 2.25 million approx.).

Curran, who was reunited with the franchise that originally brought him to the IPL in 2019, became the most expensive player in IPL history at that price. At the 2022 Twenty20 World Cup in Australia, Curran was named the tournament’s MVP and the game’s most valuable player.

Twenty-five wickets in fourteen T20s at an economy rate of 7.08 have fallen under his bat since September; this includes thirteen scalps in as many T20 World Cup matches, played over the course of six, at an economy rate of just 6.52. His batting against spin has also improved, as seen by his 27.07 average and 154.69 strike rate in 31 T20 innings since the year 2020.

Mumbai spent up to INR 18 crore for Curran in an attempt to pair him with Jofra Archer, their other major England acquisition, but were ultimately outbid by Punjab, who had the second-largest budget.

After missing out on Curran, Mumbai quickly made up for it by purchasing Australian all-rounder Cameron Green for INR 17.50 crore, the second highest price ever paid at an IPL auction.
