Babar Azam nominated for ICC Test Team of Year 2022
Babar Azam of Pakistan has been selected for the ICC Test Team of the Year for 2022, according to the organization that oversees the sport.
Throughout the entire year, the prodigious hitter displayed excellent form in the game’s longest format.
The ICC said in a press release that Pakistan’s Test skipper “was consistently outstanding with the bat during 2022, scoring four hundreds and another seven half-centuries in the calendar year.”
“In nine matches he hit an amazing 1184 runs at an average of 69.94, with his four centuries coming one apiece against the four Test opponents he faced.
“The much-anticipated home series against Australia saw Babar reach 390 runs in home circumstances, and he amassed 348 more when England arrived later in the year. His 196 against Australia in Karachi in March was and still is his greatest individual Test score.”
Azam was also awarded captain of the ICC One-Day International Team of the Year earlier today.
Australia has the most players in the team, led by Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Lyon.
“Marnus Labuschagne, who hit a mountain of runs in the second half of 2022, slots in at number three,” the ICC added, applauding the Australian hitter.
“The Australian’s 90 in the opening innings of the first Test against Pakistan was his best score of the series, and he achieved his maiden century of the year with a 104 against Sri Lanka in Galle in July.
“Across the year, his 957 total runs averaged 56.29.”
England’s cricketers in the lineup are Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, who is also named captain, and James Anderson.
“Ben Stokes instilled the change and developed such a spectacular offensive mindset in England’s incredible turnaround in 2022,” the ICC remarked.
“Stokes’ captaincy has transformed England, helping them win nine matches since he took over the team at the start of the English summer.
“He’s also been effective with both the bat and the ball.
“During the year, Stokes hit two century and 870 runs at an average of 36.25 while ranking sixth.
“And he grabbed 26 wickets in the year, employing himself in a variety of different ways. His bowling was especially effective in the series victory over South Africa, as he took ten wickets at an average of of 15.70.”
Kraigg Brathwaite of the West Indies, Kagiso Rabada of South Africa, and Rishabh Pant of India are also in the team.
