Emir of Qatar interested in buying Premier League giant Manchester United
According to a rumour in the media, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar, is considering purchasing Premier League powerhouse Manchester United.
UEFA may have to agree to a rule modification as the country’s monarch already owns French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), according to The Guardian. He rates the club below the Glazer family’s 6 billion pound asking price. Through Qatar Sports Investment, the emir bought PSG in 2011. A Qatar-owned United and a Qatar-owned PSG would not be permitted to engage in a Champions League match should such a matchup occur since current UEFA rules prohibit clubs with the same owners from playing each other in one of its competitions, according to The Guardian.
While the possibility of buying United is being investigated, it is understood that those behind Qatar’s interest are aware of UEFA regulations and are working to find a workaround. This can entail attempting to encourage UEFA to think about modifying or revising its rules.
In November of last year, the Glazer family announced it was “commencing a process to explore strategic alternatives” and put United up for sale, potentially putting an end to its 17-year ownership of the team.
The Raine Group, who managed the sale of Chelsea, has been chosen as the sole financial advisor, and it is estimated that 6 billion pounds is desired for the 20-time English champions. However, according to reports, the emir thinks 4.5 billion pounds is a more reasonable price.
One of Britain’s richest men, billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, stated last month that his company, Ineos, was in the race to acquire United. Radcliffe, 70, a lifetime admirer of the Manchester United team, was born in Failsworth in Greater Manchester.
According to report, Amnesty International called the Qatari interest in United “another wake-up call” for the Premier League to tighten its ownership regulations.
