Aiden Markram feels relief after hitting century for SA against WI
CENTURION: On Tuesday’s opening day of the first Test match between South Africa and the West Indies at SuperSport Park, Aiden Markram expressed his “relief” after scoring a century on his return to Test cricket for South Africa.
After scoring 115 in a South African total of 314 for eight, Markram acknowledged he had been uncertain about whether he would be given another chance after being sacked by South Africa the previous year.
When asked about his feelings upon scoring his sixth century in a Test match, he remarked, “That was the biggest sense of relief—and belief that I can still compete in this format.”
Markram, who had a spectacular start to his Test career by amassing 1,000 runs in his first 10 matches, was dropped last year after a protracted slump in which he failed to reach the fifty-run mark in 15 innings, with just two of those innings featuring scores of thirty or more.
You do question whether you will have the chance once more, he remarked. “The coach and captain supported me, and I’m glad since I’ve always loved red-ball cricket.”
Markram’s comeback was a component of new coach Shukri Conrad’s significant reorganization of the South African team, which also saw Temba Bavuma promoted to captaincy.
The inaugural SA20 franchise tournament was won by Markram’s Sunrisers Eastern Cape club.
In regard to confidence, he remarked, his Twenty20 achievements “may have helped.”
“You can dig a few holes for yourself if you get hesitant.”
With a score of 71 and a first-wicket partnership of 141 between him and Markram, former captain Dean Elgar also enjoyed a resurgence.
Prior to the new cap, South Africa reached 221 for one. By the end, seven wickets fell for a total of 93 runs after Tony de Zorzi was run out for 28.
Alzarri Joseph, a fast bowler, led the West Indian comeback by taking three for 60 as the bowlers from that region discovered swing, lateral movement, and improved consistency with the old ball.
The beginning of the pitch was a little sticky, according to Joseph. “But under the sun, it accelerated.”
Joseph claimed that the bowlers had benefited from the indentations left by the ball hitting an initially soft surface.
There are a couple divots there that could be problematic.
Left-handed person Before he was called up for 28, De Zorzi appeared at ease.
Joseph’s ball was punched through the covers by De Zorzi. The sliding stop by Tagenarine Chanderpaul was effective.
De Zorzi was redirected after leaving on an improbable third. Although Chanderpaul misjudged his throw, wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva managed to flick the ball into the stumps.
Two balls later, Bavuma went leg before wicket for zero off a full delivery from Joseph. He then struck again by yorking Markram. In 174 balls, Markram hit 18 fours, including his signature cover drives and hard pull smashes.
Elgar scored 71 runs off 118 balls before losing his captaincy after South Africa’s humiliating defeats in tours of England and Australia. Five changes were made to the South African team from the lineup that competed in the most recent Test in Australia in January.
Gerald Coetzee, a quick bowler, and De Zorzi both received their maiden caps. From the team that defeated Zimbabwe by an innings and four runs in Bulawayo earlier this month, the West Indies made one alteration.
Gudakesh Motie, a left-arm spinner who had 13 wickets in the victory in Bulawayo, was replaced by fast bowler Kemar Roach due to a back injury.
