Barcelona finally signed Ronaldinho’s son Joao Mendes
Joo Mendes, 18, the son of former club legend Ronaldinho, has been signed by Barcelona, according to the club’s announcement.
Mendes, a Brazilian player for Cruzeiro, agreed to join the Catalan giant on Thursday.
The teen initially joined Belo Horizonte while concealing the fact that he was the former Brazil star’s son, but came to Barcelona for a trial in January before committing to the team permanently.
Mendes will join Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy, which has produced some of the club’s greatest talents, including Xavi, Pep Guardiola, and Lionel Messi, who is currently the coach of Barça. Guardiola is the manager of Manchester City.
Mendes, a left-footed forward, can play anywhere along the front line but prefers to play as a striker.
The youngster continues the legacy of his father, who played 207 times and scored 94 goals during his five successful years with La Blaugrana.
Two LaLiga championships, one Champions League trophy, as well as a number of individual honours, including the 2005 Ballon d’Or, were won by Ronaldinho while he lived in Catalonia.
Along with spending time in Barcelona with his son, Ronaldinho recently made an appearance in Gerard Piqué’s Kings League.
The seven-a-side competition was started by Piqué along with other Spanish streamers, celebrities, and ex-soccer players in December.
Each team was chosen by its respective coaches through a draught, and there were two additional spots for visitors, such as Ronaldinho, who join a team for a single game. Iker Casillas, Javier Saviola, Joan Capdevilla, and Sergio Agüero are a few other well-known players in the league.
Tie-breaking penalty shootouts from the middle of the field – think MLS in the 1990s – unlimited substitutes, sinbins, and “wildcards” are among its unusual rules, which were voted on by fans via social media.
Both teams are given one “wildcard” before kickoff, which allows them to win a penalty kick at any time, kick out an opposing player for two minutes, and have goals scored doubled for two minutes. Teams may even be able to steal a wildcard from the opposing team.
Live streams of matches are available on Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok. According to media, Ronaldinho’s appearance drew over two million viewers across various streaming sites.
Ronaldinho played for Porcinos FC, a Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos’ team that had previously featured former Mexico star Javier “Chicharito” Hernández.
