DHAKA: England thrashed Bangladesh by 132 runs in the second one-day international in Dhaka on Friday, led by Jason Roy’s century and Sam Curran’s all-round performance.

The victory gave holders England valuable practise on spinning, low-bounce South Asian pitches ahead of the 50-over World Cup in India later this year, giving the visitors a 2-0 series lead with one match remaining.

England bowled Bangladesh out for 194 runs in 44.4 overs, thanks to Curran’s 4-29 and Adil Rashid’s 4-45, after Roy hit 132 off 124 balls to lead the side to 326-7, the highest ODI score in Dhaka in over five years.

England became the first team to win an ODI series in Bangladesh in over six years, having previously won a series here in 2016.

Curran, who took over for Chris Woakes after the first match, took three wickets in five balls in the first two overs, including two in two balls in the first over, leaving Bangladesh reeling at 9-3.

Despite veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s 58 runs, the hosts were never able to recover.

Shakib and skipper Tamim Iqbal put on 79 runs for the fourth wicket before Moeen Ali bowled Tamim out for 35. Curran caught Shakib at extra cover off Rashid.

Bangladesh, who were playing their 100th ODI in Mirpur, had previously elected to bowl first and kept the tourists at bay early on.

Top-order batsmen Phil Salt (7), James Vince (5), and Dawid Malan (11) all fell cheaply. But Roy and skipper Jos Buttler gave England a boost with a 109-run fourth-wicket stand.

When Shakib had Roy out leg before, Buttler took over the charge until he was dismissed by Mehidy for 76 off 64 balls.

Moeen added a late blitz of 42 runs off 35 balls, and Curran contributed an unbeaten 33 off 19 balls.

With 3-66, Taskin Ahmed was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers.

Buttler paid tribute to Roy and called the series victory “fantastic” ahead of the final game on Monday in Chittagong.
