Virat Kohli brings his first Test century after long time
Virat Kohli, the star cricketer for India, broke a long drought on day four of the fourth Test against Australia on Sunday. It was his first century since November 2019.
With a single off Nathan Lyon, “King Kohli” reached his 28th Test century off 241 balls, sparking wild celebrations at the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad.
He appeared to be in tears as he acknowledged the crowd and the dressing room before kissing the locket on his gold chain and smiling up at the sky.
Ravi Shastri, a commentator, yelled, “A 600-kilo gorilla has jumped on his back. He’ll be a couple of inches taller by tonight “.
In the crowd, a placard read, “Here to see King Kohli ruling in his kingdom,” as children in India shirts bowed in respect.
After reaching his first Test half-century since January 2022 on day three on a pitch that favoured the batsmen, the star batsman resumed play on his overnight score of 59.
Kohli, 34, experienced a protracted dry spell in 2017, failing to reach three figures for more than a thousand days.
Late in 2021, he resigned as Twenty20 captain. In January 2022, he lost his one-day captaincy as well. He also gave up captaining the Test team.
But in the Asia Cup T20 tournament in September of last year, he hit his first tonne after 1,020 days, and he hasn’t looked back since.
After scoring the most runs during the T20 World Cup in Australia, Kohli went on to score three ODI centuries, including two against Sri Lanka in January (113 and 166 not out).
Since his debut in 2011, the former captain has played in 108 Test matches, averaging over 48, and he has scored 75 centuries across the three international formats.
The “fabulous four,” or the top four batsmen of the modern era, still include England’s Joe Root and Australia’s Steve Smith as the leaders in the number of Test centuries. Virat Kohli is behind both of them.
During Kohli’s slump, Smith passed him, and since his previous 95th Test, Smith has scored 30 test centuries. 29 are in Root.
Kane Williamson, a batsman for New Zealand, has 26 test tonnes.
In the first Test played in India during the day and night, Kohli scored his previous Test century against Bangladesh.
