Glenn Maxwell propelled Australia to a commanding victory over the Netherlands in the 24th match of the ICC World Cup 2023.

The match, held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, India, witnessed an extraordinary performance by Maxwell, who left the Netherlands bowlers hapless.

Maxwell’s breathtaking century rewrote the history books, as he raced to his hundred in a mere 40 balls, establishing a new record for the fastest century in World Cup history. The 35-year-old dynamo entered the crease with Australia at 266-4 in the 38th over, shortly after the wicket of Josh Inglis had fallen.

From the moment he arrived at the crease, Maxwell showed no mercy to the Dutch bowlers, plundering 106 runs in just 44 deliveries. His explosive innings included 17 boundaries, nine fours, and eight massive sixes. The Netherlands bowlers struggled to contain the ferocity of Maxwell’s onslaught, as he kept piling on the runs for a relentless 10-over spree, forming a remarkable 103-run partnership with his captain, Pat Cummins.

Maxwell’s record-breaking century eclipsed the previous record held by South Africa’s Aidan Markram, who had reached his century in 49 balls during their match against Sri Lanka at the same venue.

Australia’s innings had already taken off in a flying start, despite an early setback with the loss of Mitchell Marsh. Steve Smith and David Warner’s formidable 132-run partnership laid the foundation for a massive total. After Smith’s departure for a well-earned 71 runs, Marnus Labuschagne joined forces with Warner to add 84 runs to the tally.

However, Australia faced a flurry of quick wickets after Warner’s dismissal, and it appeared they might have to settle for a total in the range of 300-330. That was until Maxwell’s blazing knock altered the course of the game, propelling the five-time World Champions to an imposing total.

Australia, who had suffered back-to-back defeats in their initial two matches of the World Cup against India and South Africa, made a triumphant comeback by defeating Sri Lanka and Pakistan, securing their spot in the top four of the tournament standings.

The playing XIs for the match were as follows:

Australia: David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis (wk), Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa

Netherlands: Vikramjit Singh, Max ODowd, Colin Ackermann, Bas de Leede, Teja Nidamanuru, Scott Edwards (c & wk), Sybrand Engelbrecht, Logan van Beek, Roelof van der Merwe, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren

This incredible innings by Glenn Maxwell will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the highlights of the 2023 ICC World Cup, setting a new benchmark for explosive batting in the history of the tournament.
