ICC condoles death of former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi
The cricketing world is in mourning as it bids farewell to one of its true legends, former Indian cricket captain and left-arm spin maestro, Bishan Singh Bedi, who passed away on Monday at the age of 77.
Bedi’s demise comes after a prolonged battle with illness, during which he underwent several surgeries, including one on his knee in late September of this year. He is survived by his wife, Anju, and their two children, Neha and Angad.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) expressed its profound sorrow over the loss of this cricketing icon. ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice paid tribute to Bedi, highlighting his exceptional skills and influence on the game. Allardice stated, “It’s sad to hear of the passing of Bishan Bedi. I would like to extend heartfelt condolences from everyone at the ICC to the family of one of the greats of the game and one whose exploits in Test cricket will be remembered for a long time. He was the kind of spinner who could excel in different conditions and would have been one of the greats in any era.”
Bishan Singh Bedi, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest left-arm spinners in the history of cricket, was a pivotal member of the famous Indian spin quartet, alongside Erapalli Prasanna, B.S. Chandrashekar, and S. Venkataraghavan. This quartet played a significant role in India’s success during the 1970s, securing victories in both home and overseas conditions.
Bedi, an inductee into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, left an indelible mark on the cricketing world. Over the course of his illustrious Test career, which spanned from 1967 to 1979, he captured a total of 266 wickets in 67 matches, achieving 14 five-wicket hauls. His excellence wasn’t limited to the longest format; he also made an impact in the early days of One-Day Internationals (ODIs), claiming seven wickets in 10 matches, during a time when the format was still in its infancy.
In addition to his international achievements, Bedi enjoyed tremendous success in first-class cricket. He tallied an impressive 1,560 wickets while representing various teams, including Delhi and Northern Punjab in India, and Northamptonshire in England.
Bishan Bedi’s leadership skills were also evident when he captained the Indian cricket team, leading them to six Test victories, including memorable triumphs in the West Indies and Australia. His contributions to Indian cricket extended to the global stage, as he played a key role in the 1975 World Cup, delivering an extraordinary performance against East Africa with figures of 12-8-6-1. This spell remains one of the most economical in the history of 60-over ODI matches.
As the cricketing fraternity pays its respects to Bishan Singh Bedi, his legacy as a true cricketing giant will endure for generations to come. He will forever be remembered for his artistry with the ball, his sportsmanship, and his significant impact on the sport of cricket.
