In a highly anticipated clash, England’s Richard Illingworth and Richard Kettleborough have been named as the on-field umpires for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 final between India and Australia. The cricketing spectacle is set to unfold in Ahmedabad, where a record-breaking crowd of over 100,000 is expected to witness the battle for cricket supremacy on Sunday.

This marks the second World Cup final appearance for Kettleborough, who previously officiated in the 2015 Cricket World Cup final. Partnering with Kumar Dharmasena, Kettleborough’s return to the final stage emphasizes his experience and expertise in officiating high-stakes matches. Illingworth, on the other hand, makes his debut as a match official in a World Cup final after being a player in the 1992 Cricket World Cup final.

Elevated to the ICC International List on the same day in November 2009, both Illingworth and Kettleborough have had illustrious careers. They recently officiated as on-field umpires in the semi-finals, with Illingworth overseeing India’s win over New Zealand in Mumbai, and Kettleborough presiding over Australia’s thrilling victory against South Africa in Kolkata.

The officials for the final also include Joel Wilson as the third umpire, Chris Gaffaney as the fourth umpire, and match referee Andy Pycroft. All were part of the officiating teams during the semi-finals, bringing a wealth of experience to ensure the smooth conduct of the high-stakes encounter.

Both Illingworth and Kettleborough have been recipients of the prestigious David Shepherd Trophy, presented to the ICC’s Umpire of the Year. Kettleborough secured this award three consecutive times between 2013 and 2015, while Illingworth earned it in 2019 and 2022, further solidifying their status as top cricketing officials.

With Australia eyeing their sixth World Cup title and India aiming to claim their first ICC trophy since 2013, the final promises to be a thrilling contest between two cricketing powerhouses. The stage is set for a historic showdown in Ahmedabad, as cricket fans worldwide eagerly await the culmination of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
