In a strategic move to fortify the future of Pakistan cricket, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the appointment of former left-arm pacer Wahab Riaz as the new chief selector for the national men’s selection committee. This decision comes on the heels of Riaz’s recent retirement from international cricket, marking a transition from player to selector.

With an illustrious career that saw him represent Pakistan in 154 international matches, Wahab Riaz now assumes the pivotal role of shaping the team for the upcoming Test tour in Australia and the T20I series against New Zealand. The PCB, in a brief press release, highlighted Riaz’s initial responsibilities, stating that his first task would be selecting the squad for the three-match Test series against Australia from December 14 to January 7 and the five-match T20I series against New Zealand from January 12 to 21.

Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Wahab Riaz thanked the PCB staff and Chairman PCB Management Committee, Mr. Zaka Ashraf, for entrusting him with the crucial responsibility. In a video released by the PCB, Riaz conveyed, “I am honoured to assume the role of chairperson for the national men’s selection committee. The decision to involve former players in cricketing matters is commendable, and I am willing to work for the betterment of Pakistan cricket.”

Acknowledging the challenges associated with leading a selection committee, Riaz outlined his primary goals, emphasizing the importance of selecting well-rounded squads equipped with the necessary skill sets. With a significant Australia tour on the horizon, part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle, and a T20I series against New Zealand, Riaz highlighted the opportunity to develop a formidable unit leading up to the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies in June next year.

Wahab Riaz expressed his commitment to prioritizing top performers in domestic cricket and fostering a collaborative relationship with the Pakistan Men’s Team Director, Mohammad Hafeez. He stated, “My primary goal would be to give weightage to the top performers in domestic cricket and announce well-rounded squads equipped with the necessary skillsets. I will always be available to the players for feedback and advice.”

This strategic move follows recent developments within the PCB, including the appointment of new captains for T20I and Test cricket after Babar Azam stepped down from his position. The cricketing community will be keenly observing the impact of Wahab Riaz’s tenure as chief selector on the future of Pakistan cricket as the team gears up for challenging tours and international competitions in the coming months.
