Gmail’s new appearance makes Chat, Meet, and other apps easier to discover.
Gmail has a new look that makes it easier to find Chat, Meet, and other Google apps by putting them all in a single navigation pane. Starting today, more people are getting the new look, but if you don’t like it, it’s easy to go back to the old Gmail.
The new Gmail structure, introduced in January, eliminates the need for separate tabs for Google apps. These are consolidated in a list view at the top left of the screen, above your inboxes. You can integrate apps in the new view or stick to Gmail. Switching back to the old design is easy.
This new view may be defaulted to you. To return to the old view, click Settings in the top-right corner of the screen, then Quick Settings. Once there, click Reload.
In addition to the functional improvements made, Google has made some cosmetic changes. You may find “Material You” on the menu bar. This is the new design language for Google products and can be found in the likes of Android, ChromeOS, and many more. In contrast to the traditional Gmail’s stark white, this new color scheme is a sleek update on Google’s 2014 Material Design.
This new Gmail design, which Google is rolling out gradually, is referred to by the company as the “integrated Gmail layout.” Since Google is so concerned in getting feedback on Gmail’s new design, it’s possible you’re not even seeing it yet. Google’s help center has all the gory details on the new experience, including how the chat bubbles and notifications function.
