Meta is expands Quest’s virtual reality home space include social hangouts

• The v41 Quest upgrade will include a new Horizon Home area.
• Horizon Home allows users to ask other Quest users to join them in social events, such as viewing films together.
• It’s the first step toward a bigger Horizon-branded “metaverse”.

Virtual reality headsets from Meta Quest will soon have a feature that allows you to hang out with other people on your homescreen.

More possibilities for personalising your Home area are “currently in development,” according to Zuckerberg’s Facebook post. According to a Meta representative, the v41 update will be released next week, at which time we’ll learn more about the system, including how many people it can accommodate in a single hangout.

Horizon Home is the latest addition to Meta’s Horizon Workrooms virtual reality meeting software and Horizon Worlds creative and social platform. It’s comparable to Facebook Spaces, a 2017 app where you could play minigames and take virtual photographs with your pals.

Horizon replaced Spaces in 2019, however it never seemed to catch on with the success of standalone VR hangout applications like BigScreen, VRChat, and Rec Room. Until now, moving about and pulling up apps on the Quest homescreen was a solo experience.

Earlier, after a decade of trading as Facebook, the social media giant is shedding the last vestige of its old corporate avatar as it begins trading under the ticker symbol ‘META’ on Thursday.

Meta Platforms Inc rebranded from its eponymous social networking platform in October 2021, betting that the metaverse, a shared virtual realm, will succeed mobile internet.
