Despite fears about jeopardizing its reputation, NASA announces intentions to gather a team of experts to investigate “unidentified aerial phenomena,” also known as UFOs.

The focus, according to the US space agency, will be on identifying available data in order to learn more about unusual sky encounters.

Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA’s science mission leader, admitted that traditional scientists may have reservations about researching UAPs.

“We are not shying away from reputational risk,” he said.

“What we’re actually trying to do here is start an investigation without an end in mind,” he added later. “We’re looking at the Earth in new ways, and we’re also looking the other way, at the sky, in new ways.”

The scientific team will be led by David Spergel, a former director of Princeton University’s astrophysics department, and the study will be orchestrated by Daniel Evans, a senior researcher in NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.

By Autumn, a group of independent scientists will be assembled, and they will spend the next nine months preparing a public report on their findings.

Mr. Evans stated that NASA will spend “a few tens of thousands of dollars” to no more than $100,000 on the project.
