According to two people with knowledge of the situation, private rocket company SpaceX dismissed at least five employees after discovering they had written and distributed a letter criticizing founder Elon Musk and pleading with leadership to make the workplace more inclusive.

A request for comment from Reuters was not immediately answered by SpaceX.

According to three individuals with knowledge of the incident, The New York Times reported on Thursday that SpaceX has fired personnel connected to the letter. The number of fired employees was not specifically stated.

According to the New York Times, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said in an email that the corporation had looked into the letter and “removed a number of personnel involved.”

The employees who circulated the letter, according to Shotwell’s email, were fired for making other employees feel “uncomfortable, intimidated and harassed, and/or furious since the letter encouraged them to sign onto something that did not reflect their views,” according to the newspaper.

The billionaire Musk is pursuing a $44 billion takeover of Twitter and has stated his support for more open speech restrictions on the platform. He told Twitter staffers on Thursday that as long as the content is lawful, the site should permit “quite absurd things.”
